About
Maël Bächtold is the co-founder of the independent type foundry Bolid System, together with Arthur Schwarz. They develop typefaces that range from expressive display designs to versatile text families, always shaped by clarity, experimentation, and a deep respect for typographic craft. At Bolid System, type is approached as a material that structures how ideas are seen, read, and understood.
Before co-founding the foundry, Bächtold worked as an independent typeface and graphic designer, collaborating with cultural institutions, brands, and creative studios. His practice has always placed letters at the center, whether through custom fonts, visual identities, or typographic systems for digital and editorial environments. At the core of his approach is a commitment to clarity and experimentation. Each typeface is crafted with careful attention to structure and detail, aiming to bring both functional precision and character to visual communication. In 2021, he established his own studio and co-founded Collectif 66A in Neuchâtel. He worked for various international or local clients in a wide range of fields.
Bächtold graduated from a master of Arts in Type Design at ÉCAL that same year. Before that, he earned with honors, a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Design from HEAD–Genève in 2018. His diploma project, created in an early collaboration with Arthur Schwarz, was the conecption of a variable display font named Bolid, inspired by car racing and speed.
